Automotive Catalytic Converters: The Role of Platinum, Palladium & Rhodium

An automotive catalytic converter is an emissions-control device installed in the exhaust system of petrol and diesel vehicles. Its primary job is to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones before they are released into the atmosphere.

Inside the converter, a honeycomb-shaped ceramic or metallic substrate is coated with a washcoat containing Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) — mainly Platinum (Pt), Palladium (Pd), and Rhodium (Rh). These metals act as catalysts to trigger essential chemical reactions that purify the exhaust fumes.

How the catalytic converter works

A typical catalytic converter is installed in a vehicle’s exhaust system. It contains a honeycomb-structured ceramic or metallic substrate coated with a washcoat and then impregnated with small amounts of PGMs.

01. Platinum

Platinum has long been a standard in catalytic converters, particularly good at high-temperature oxidation reactions (CO → CO₂, HC → H₂O + CO₂). Its stability at elevated temperatures makes it durable.

02. Palladium

Palladium is often used either on its own or in combination with platinum. It’s especially effective for oxidising hydrocarbons and CO, and over time more vehicle converters have used higher palladium loadings.

03. Rhodium

Rhodium plays a critical role in NOₓ reduction – converting NOₓ gases into harmless nitrogen and oxygen. Although used in smaller amounts, its function is vital.
